Nursing 101 – Introduction to Professional Nursing

Nursing 101 introduces the student to the role of professional nursing. It explores the historical perspectives that have
shaped nursing and examines the current concepts that operationalize professional practice such as health and wellness, nursing
process, ethical-legal, change, cultural diversity and critical thinking.
Nursing 102 – Nursing Process and Nursing Skills I
86 hours: 30 theory, 56 clinical
Nursing 102 introduces the student to the nursing process. Emphasis is placed on skills that allow the student to offer basic
nursing care to medical-surgical clients. Clinical laboratory experiences allow the student to practice required clinical
skills such as infection control, medical asepsis, hand washing, bed making, isolation, hygiene, body mechanics, mobility/safety,
vital signs and elimination.
Nursing 103 – Nursing Process and nursing Skills II
86 hours: 30 theory, 56 clinical
Nursing 103 introduces the student to the nursing skills required for safe administration of medications.

Anatomy of a mammal, with special references to that of a man. Students who have had BIOL 421 may not schedule this course.
BIOL 141 – Physiology
Normal functions of the animal body, with special reference to those of man. Students who have passed BIOL 421 may not schedule
this course. Must take this course before or with BIOL 142.
BIOL 142 – Physiology Laboratory
Experiments demonstrating basic physiological principles with special reference to man.
Prerequisite or concurrent: BIOL 141.
BIOL 297 PATHO – Intro to Pathophysiological Concepts
The course will cover the alternation of basic physiological processes associated with the disease state.
BI SC 001 – Structure and Function of Organisms
A general biology course that covers the basic principles of cell structure and function, energy transduction by living systems,
genetics and inheritance and the organismal biology of plants and animals.
Students who have passed BIOL 27, 141 or 102 may not select this course.
BMB 211 (BIOLOGY MOLECULAR BIOLOGY) – Elementary Biochemistry
An overview of biochemistry that includes: properties of biomolecules, bioenergetics, metabolism, nutrition, genetics and
molecular biology.
ENGL 15 – Rhetoric and Composition
Instruction and practice in writing expository prose that show sensitivity to audience and purpose.
ENGL 202A – Writing in the Social Sciences
Instruction in writing persuasive arguments about significant issues in the social sciences.
Prerequisites: Engl 15 or 30.
MICRB 106 – Elementary Microbiology
Importance of microorganisms in public health and disease, agriculture and industry; descriptive course for nontechnical students.
MICROB 107 – Elementary Microbiology
Selected techniques with regard to recognition and enumeration of bacteria; effects of chemical and physical agents of microorganisms.
Pre-requisite or concurrent: Micro 106.
NUTR 251 – Introductory Principles of Nutrition
The nutrients, food sources and physiological functions as related to human growth and well-being throughout life; current
nutrition issues. Students who have passed Nutr 150 may not schedule
this course.

Nursing 200 – Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing

This course introduces the student to the nursing care of adult clients with selected pathophysiologic disorders. Concepts
related to the care of the elderly are also discussed. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and nursing process. Strategies
to promote psychosocial integrity are explored. Nursing skill development is facilitated in the clinical setting where students
will perform procedures related to a medical-surgical client.
Nursing 201 – Adult Medical-Surgical Nursing/Mental Health Nursing
336 hours: 112 theory, 224 clinical
Introduces the student to care of the adult client and their family with specific pathophysiologic and mental disorders utilizing
a holistic approach. The student explores biopsychosocial concepts and the effects of stress on the client’s physiologic and
psychosocial well-being. Emphasis is placed on the continuation of learning through increased integration of therapeu-tic
relationship to effect adaptive changes in the client’s health status. Students are also encouraged to be cognizant of the
ethical and legal standards and issues of nursing practice. Nursing 201 introduces the student to the nursing process. Emphasis
is placed on skills that allow the student to offer basic nursing care to medical-surgical clients. Clinical laboratory experiences

Nursing 300 – Nursing of the Childbearing and Childrearing Family

This course explores the physical, psychological, sociocultural and developmental aspects of the childbearing/childrearing
family. The family is recognized as the basic unit of our culture. Pregnancy is considered a normal developmental stage and
physiological processes within the life cycle. The child is considered as an individual on a continuum of developmental changes
from birth to adolescence, and as a member of a family unit maturing within a culture and a community. The experience of wellness
and illness are viewed as family-centered events. Many aspects of maternal and child health nursing are explored. Special
emphasis is placed on promotion of wellness in the childbearing/childrearing family through health assessment and teaching.
Nursing 301 – Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing
336 hours: 112 theory, 224 clinical
This course explores the concepts of nursing care in the acutely ill individual, manifesting complex, multisystem health problems.
The goal of this course is for the student to participate in the restoration of health while prioritizing the care of the
acutely ill individual. Attention to prompt diagnosis and early treatment of acute health problems is emphasized. Attainment
of this goal is through use of the nursing process, with emphasis on health assessment, evaluation and modification of care.
Communication is an integral part of the nursing process; therefore, effective oral and written communications will be stressed.
Although attention is directed to immediate health problems, the student is encouraged to view the client as part of the family
and community. Knowledge of psychosocial and developmental tasks is applied to care of the individual and family. The effect
of critical illness on the client’s family and/or significant others is discussed.
Nursing 302 – Nursing Leadership/Community Health
336 hours: 112 theory, 224 clinical
Nursing 302 explores the concepts and process of leadership and management of care for individuals, families, and aggregates
within the health care delivery system. Leadership in Nursing provides students the opportunity to identify, analyze, and
synthesize concepts of leadership and management as they apply to professional practice. The course will explore prevention,
restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance of optimal health state and function and the influence of community and ecological
issues upon the health populations. The components of evaluation and modification of care, teaching for health maintenance
and home management are also explored.
Nursing 397 – Senior Seminar
15 Hours
The senior seminar is designed to prepare the student for the National Council Licensing Examination(NCLEX-RN). Due to the
changing nature of nursing and the focus of the examination, the administration and faculty of the Frankford Hospital School
of Nursing have committed to providing every graduate with the tools required to ensure NCLEX success. The course will include
utilization of the NLN diagnostic test for predicting success, review of principles and design of the test plan, practice
testing sessions, review of principles and design of the test plan, practice testing sessions, articulation with a national
review course, obtaining a faculty mentor and utilizing individual test scores to develop each student’s unique preparation
plan.
