A century of excellence ...
In the fall of 1904, a training school for nurses was established at 4918 Penn Street in Northeast Philadelphia, just a block
away from Frankford Hospital, which had been founded in 1903. Under the direction of Anna C. Garrett, who was also Frankford
Hospital’s first superintendent, the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing set forth to provide exceptional training to students
interested in pursuing the nursing profession. A report Ms. Garrett wrote dated 1905 states: “There are now six nurses in
the Training School. In addition to the practical instruction in the wards, dispensaries and operating room, there are weekly
lectures on surgical and medical nursing, anatomy and physiology and bandaging.”
Nearly a century later, the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing has developed into a distinguished co-educational institution,
having provided more than 2,500 students with comprehensive learning experiences in professional nursing.
Never before have there been greater opportunities for people interested in a career in nursing. In fact, nursing is currently
one of the most attractive career options available both to young men and women just out of high school and to others who
have been out in the world working or raising a family.
Also, there is a need for nurses who are well prepared to work in a variety of health care settings. For students who work
hard and do well, a well-paying, professionally satisfying position is virtually assured.
And at the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing you now have an unprecedented opportunity for growth in your nursing career.
An opportunity not only to become an RN, but also to further your education by achieving the BSN Degree through Thomas Jefferson
University.
Since its early days, the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing has regarded nursing as more than just a job. It is a highly
respected and successful career that provides endless opportunity. As the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing celebrates
its 100-year anniversary it continues to carry on the long tradition of educating caring and responsible nurses who will become
a vital part of the healthcare community and the community in which they live.
