John A. Heim, M.D., a board-certified thoracic surgeon, has recently joined Frankford Hospitals’ Department of Surgery as
Head of the Section of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Heim comes to us from the Virtua Health System and Our Lady of Lourdes in South
Jersey, where he practiced cardiothoracic surgery for over 10 years.
Dr. Heim’s clinical interests include the surgical treatment of all thoracic malignancies. In his new role, he will be working
closely in a cooperative manner with Frankford’s Departments of Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine and
Gastroenterology. Dr. Heim is also interested in the surgical treatments of benign disease of the chest. He has experience
in video-assisted thoracic surgical procedures including dorsal sympathectomy in the treatment of upper extremity reflex sympathetic
dystrophy. He has experience in pacemaker implantation, outpatient mediastinoscopy and the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax.
Dr. Heim earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey, in Mahwah, NJ, in 1981. He went on to receive
a Doctor of Medicine degree from the UMDNJ – New Jersey Medical School, in Newark, NJ, in 1985.
Dr. Heim’s extensive clinical training began with a surgical internship and residency at Hartford Hospital, University of
Connecticut, in Hartford, CT, where he stayed on to serve as the chief resident of general surgery in 1989. In 1990, Dr. Heim
completed a fellowship in thoracic surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York, NY, and later completed
a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, IL, in 1992.
Dr. Heim is a member of the American Medical Association, the Camden County Medical Society and the Medical Society of New
Jersey.
Dr. Heim is currently seeing patients in Suite 214 of the Medical Office Building at Frankford Hospital – Torresdale, located
