Peer Support

                                                                            The Heart Center at Torresdale

When it comes to healing, there’s simply nothing like talking with someone who has been through the same experience.  And this certainly holds true for heart disease.

The success of peer support in heart disease is well established.  Whether it’s one to one or in a group, this kind of interaction reassures patients that they are not alone, and that others have and are having the same experience.  It gives them a chance to share their fears, concerns, or sadness – and their successes.  Peer matching or peer groups gives patients a chance to learn how others have coped with heart conditions and to find out how they have found their way through the experience of heart disease and heart treatment.  Patients discover first-hand how to take heart disease in stride, and they get to see more clearly the path back to activity and vitality.  They learn about the gains in heart health that are attainable for them from other patients who have taken these steps and achieved such improvement.

Frankford Hospitals also offer The Club of Hearts, a support group for cardiac patients that meets on the third Thursday of each month. For more information on times and locations, please call 215-612-5360.

Low mood is a common result of having, and especially first learning that you have, heart disease.  This is especially true if you hav erequired unexpected emergency care.  Peer support helps to relieve stress and assists patients through this period and through the process of addressing a heart condition.  It is a proven way to help to safeguard, enhance, and maintain health and determination during heart care.
