At Frankford Hospital's Cancer Center, an experienced team of radiation oncologists, physicists, nurses and therapists evaluate
patients with the assistance of the newest technology available. All board certified in radiation oncology and faculty members
of Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Frankford's radiation oncologists offer patients customized treatment
in a caring environment. Patients have access to the latest radiation therapy technology and delivery systems, national clinical
research studies and multidisciplinary treatment programs.
Technology...
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Frankford Hospital - Torresdale is equipped with two Varian 2100C linear accelerators
and the most advanced three-dimensional treatment planning system.
Patients are also offered the precision of Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT), a new treatment technology that
enables more focused delivery of radiation therapy by varying the intensity of the radiation beam. This is one of the newest
forms of radiation therapy and is currently available at only a few hospitals in Philadelphia. IMRT also employs Multi Leaf
Collimation, a process that uses sophisticated computer software that automatically shapes patients' individual therapy plans
to target their cancer site.
Frankford's Department of Radiation Oncology also offers a computed tomography (CT) simulator, which allows patients to have
their CT scans taken right in the department. While this saves the patient time as well as a trip to Radiology, it provides
physicians with the fastest diagnostic and treatment planning capability available.
Research...
Frankford's Department of Radiation Oncology participates in a number of national clinical research groups including the Radiation
Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project
and the Jefferson Oncology Group (JOG). For more information on Frankford's Clinical Trials, please call 215-612-5296.

Multidisciplinary Care...
Prostate Seed Implantation Program
Frankford offers prostate seed implantation (also called brachytherapy), a new form of radiation therapy for prostate cancer.
This outpatient procedure involves implanting low-dose radioactive "seeds" into the prostate to administer localized radiation
therapy to the tumor. A urologist, radiation oncologist and a radiation physicist work closely together to create an individualized
treatment plan.
Breast Health Program
Since 1995, Frankford's multidisciplinary Breast Health Program has treated over 500 patients newly diagnosed with breast
cancer. The program allows the patient to be evaluated by medical oncologists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists
all in the same day. Before the consultation visit, a multidisciplinary panel of cancer experts will review all of the patient's
x-rays, mammograms, medical records and pathology slides. Before she leaves, all of her questions will be answered and treatment
recommendations will be made by a consensus of experts.
