Bariatric Surgery Approaches
Success through multiple approaches.
Aria’s surgeons offer three different laparoscopic operations for surgical weight loss – the adjustable band, the sleeve gastrectomy, and the Rouxen- Y Gastric Bypass. All operations are safely performed using small incisions so patients experience faster recovery, less discomfort, and minimal scarring. A short hospital stay is required for the sleeve gastrectomy and bypass, while the majority of band patients can leave the hospital the same day as the operation. Our clinical team will help you select the procedure that is most beneficial for you.
- Adjustable Band - The adjustable gastric band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. The band limits the amount of food the stomach can hold and slows the passage of food. Injecting saline into the small access port under the skin adjusts the amount of restriction.
- Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy - Surgeons remove the greater curvature of the stomach in the sleeve gastrectomy, thus greatly decreasing the size of the stomach and limiting the amount of food the patient can eat. Stomach hormone secretion is altered leading to an improved sense of satiety and greater weight loss.
- Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass - The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass achieves weight loss through decreasing the amount of food the patient can eat as well as through a component of malabsorption of nutrients. Vitamin supplementation is required after the operation.
Post-operatively, all patients enjoy close, personal follow-up with their surgeons and other members of the weight loss team. Band patients may require simple adjustments of the implanted device in the office. Regardless of which operation you choose, the vast majority of patients enjoy significant weight loss in the immediate months after surgery – and typically achieve their new weight in the first year to 18 months after the operation.
