Smoking and Your Health
Smoking causes breathing problems, heart disease, and cancer.
Thousands of chemicals are in cigarette smoke. At least 60 of them cause cancer. Smoking is linked to many cancers. Smoking is behind a third of all cancer deaths in this country and 90 percent of all lung cancers.
Smoking ruins the way the lungs clean themselves. That raises the risk of getting pneumonia. Smoking causes bronchitis and emphysema, together called COPD. COPD will be the third leading cause of death around the world by 2020.
Smoking raises the risk for heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in this country. Smoking causes cholesterol to build up in blood vessels. That makes them narrower. Smoking makes it easier for blood to clot. This can lead to blood clots. These clots can block blood from getting to the lungs or the brain.
Smoking harms people who are exposed to your smoke. Children who breathe in your smoke are more likely to get bronchitis, pneumonia, and ear infections.
