Technology...
External Radiation Therapy
For patients who require external beam radiation therapy, the Radiation Oncology Department at Frankford Hospital – Torresdale
is equipped with two Varian 2100C linear accelerators and the most advanced three-dimensional treatment planning system. Patients
are also offered the precision of Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT), a new treatment technology that enables
more precise delivery of external radiation therapy by varying the intensity of the radiation beam. This is one of the newest
forms of radiation therapy and is currently available at only a few hospitals in the Philadelphia area. IMRT also employs
Multi Leaf Collimation, a process that uses sophisticated computer software to automatically shape patients’ individual therapy
plans and target their cancer site.
Prostate Seed Implantation Therapy
Frankford provides internal radiation therapy in the form of prostate seed implantation (also called brachytherapy). This
outpatient procedure involves inserting low-dose radioactive “seeds” into the prostate to administer localized radiation therapy
to the tumor. A urologist, radiation oncologist and diagnostic radiologist, along with dedicated ultrasonographers, physicists
and operating room personnel, work closely to create an individualized treatment plan with the assistance of the latest ultrasound
equipment and treatment planning software.
The implantation procedures are performed in a state-of-the-art Cystoscopy Suite at Frankford Hospital – Bucks County in Langhorne,
Pa. Highlighted by a high percentage of positive patient outcomes, Frankford’s Prostate Seed Implantation Program has grown
to be one of the largest in the Delaware Valley.
